Stroke
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. This disease occurs when the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain is compromised, either by constricted blood vessels, a clot or a burst blood vessel. Since the brain needs the oxygen to not only function, but to survive, the section that is being deprived actually starts to die.
Stroke is one of the risks associated with the abuse of many illicit drugs, including heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine.
What are the Signs and Symptoms of Stroke?
If you experience one or more of the following signs or symptoms, you should call 9-1-1 as soon as possible. The faster one receives treatment after a stroke occurs, the better off they will be able to recover. The symptoms of stroke include:
- A sudden and severe headache that comes out of nowhere
- Sudden weakness or numbness in the face, leg or arm (predominantly on one side of the body)
- Sudden confusion
- Trouble speaking or comprehension
- Sudden vision problems in one or both eyes
- Sudden dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
- Sudden difficulty with walking
Sometimes an individual will suffer what’s called a transient ischemic attack (TIA), otherwise known as a warning or mini stroke. In this case, the individual will feel the symptoms of stroke but not suffer any long-term damage. However, a TIA is considered a precursor event, meaning that a more significant stroke is likely to occur if treatment is not administered quickly.

TESTIMONIALS
I know you will never believe it but it has been ten and a half months since I finished treatment and am still in recovery. I know you will say it may be more of a miracle that I finished rehab being that I was about as resistant a patient can be, but I am making it one day at a time. Special thanks to Robert.
-- Terrance G, Morristown, New Jersey
This is to my therapist Bobby, who never gave up on me. I could never have made it through rehab without your patience. You taught me that I am worth it.
-- Bryan, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
My life was a shambles, my husband wanted a divorce and my children wouldn't speak with me. I felt hopeless until we all got together for family treatment. While we all have some hills to climb, my recovery is solid. Who would have thought, 476 days sober. Love to all.
-- Patti P, Atlanta, Georgia
You guys were right when you told me to get right into meetings. They have kept me clean and sober and I have made a lot of good friends. Thanks for bringing meetings into rehab.
-- Dean W, Dallas Texas
