Prescription Drug Addiction
Methadone Addiction
How is Methadone Addiction Developed?
Methadone is an opioid pain killer that is only available through a doctor's prescription. One of the most common uses of methadone is in the detoxification process for patients withdrawing from other types of drugs. The medication is administered to the patient to help reduce the severity of their typical withdrawal symptoms. The greatest challenge with this, however, is that if the administration is not carefully monitored or it is done by someone inexperienced, the patient could ultimately develop a methadone addiction.
When a methadone addiction occurs, the patient's dependence on their original drug of choice is then replaced by a craving for the methadone. Ironically, this then forces the patient to undergo detox and withdrawal from methadone, the very medication that was being used to help eliminate the withdrawal symptoms from their original addiction.
Methadone Withdrawal
Because of its opioid classification, methadone is easily and highly addictive. When cessation of the drug is attempted, users experience a host of painful methadone withdrawal symptoms which make self-detox a virtual impossibility. The symptoms of methadone withdrawal include:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Sweating
- Back ache
- Muscle spasms
- Severe bone pain
- Mood swings
- Tremors
In some cases, patients claim that methadone withdrawal is even more uncomfortable than the withdrawal symptoms of their original addiction. For this reason, it is necessary to detox from methadone in a professional treatment center that is highly experienced in providing methadone addiction treatment.
Methadone Addiction Treatment
For many people, developing a methadone addiction after taking the drug in detox program is like a slap in the face. After all, they entered rehab to be free from drugs, not to develop another, more difficult addiction. Because of this, methadone addiction treatment needs to include a strong counseling component to help patients come to terms with their addiction so a progression toward recovery can occur.

TESTIMONIALS
I know you will never believe it but it has been ten and a half months since I finished treatment and am still in recovery. I know you will say it may be more of a miracle that I finished rehab being that I was about as resistant a patient can be, but I am making it one day at a time. Special thanks to Robert.
-- Terrance G, Morristown, New Jersey
This is to my therapist Bobby, who never gave up on me. I could never have made it through rehab without your patience. You taught me that I am worth it.
-- Bryan, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
My life was a shambles, my husband wanted a divorce and my children wouldn't speak with me. I felt hopeless until we all got together for family treatment. While we all have some hills to climb, my recovery is solid. Who would have thought, 476 days sober. Love to all.
-- Patti P, Atlanta, Georgia
You guys were right when you told me to get right into meetings. They have kept me clean and sober and I have made a lot of good friends. Thanks for bringing meetings into rehab.
-- Dean W, Dallas Texas
