Drug Relapse Prevention

Drug relapse prevention is a major component of most successful drug addiction treatment programs. Relapse prevention plans are designed independently for each patient so they can learn an entire skill set based on healing the mind, body and spirit that they can incorporate into their daily lives to promote and maintain recovery.

Drug Relapse Prevention Starts with a Plan

Drug relapse prevention plans provide the individual suffering from drug abuse or addiction with new ways to effectively deal with their disorders. It is in this component of treatment where the individual will discover new ways coping with their illness once outside of rehab. This detailed plan must be followed in order for the individual to avoid returning to a life of drugs and/or alcohol.

Understanding Drug Relapse Prevention

A person must first understand the relapse process in order to understand the basics behind drug relapse prevention. Relapse is defined as one returning to drugs after a period of abstinence. In most cases, there are significant warning signs that can indicate an individual may be in danger of relapse.

Drug relapse prevention offers those people recovering from addictions the strategies that will help them understand and deal with the triggers and/or stressors in their environment that may have originally led to their alcoholism or drug addiction. This can involve:

  • Learning how to deal with old acquaintances who may still be using
  • Avoiding temptations
  • Learning how to keep oneself out of a bad situation

Understanding and following your drug relapse prevention plan is your strongest ally in your battle to maintain the progression you accomplished during your time in rehab.

The Basics of Stepping Stone’s Drug Relapse Prevention Plan

To reduce the possibility of relapse the drug relapse prevention program offered at Stepping Stone Center for Recovery initiates one healing step at a time.

  • Initially, a person must be stabilized medically and psychiatrically within our detox program.
  • Therapy is used to help individuals recuperate from the depression, anxiety, stress and hopelessness they have been experiencing during their years of drug addiction.
  • Individuals follow a daily structure that includes regularly attending support groups, participating in regular exercise and establishing a healthy eating plan and diet.
  • Patients maintain a relationship with their primary addiction treatment provider.

While preventing relapse is not an exact science and cannot be guaranteed, there are certain guidelines that if followed, will greatly increase the odds of achieving and maintaining long-term recovery. Stepping Stone Center for Recovery incorporates relapse prevention as a significant part of our treatment philosophy, greatly enhancing a person's chance of embracing quality recovery.

TESTIMONIALS

I know you will never believe it but it has been ten and a half months since I finished treatment and am still in recovery. I know you will say it may be more of a miracle that I finished rehab being that I was about as resistant a patient can be, but I am making it one day at a time. Special thanks to Robert.

-- Terrance G, Morristown, New Jersey

This is to my therapist Bobby, who never gave up on me. I could never have made it through rehab without your patience. You taught me that I am worth it.

-- Bryan, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

My life was a shambles, my husband wanted a divorce and my children wouldn't speak with me. I felt hopeless until we all got together for family treatment. While we all have some hills to climb, my recovery is solid. Who would have thought, 476 days sober. Love to all.

-- Patti P, Atlanta, Georgia

You guys were right when you told me to get right into meetings. They have kept me clean and sober and I have made a lot of good friends. Thanks for bringing meetings into rehab.
