Does a Drug Rehabilitation Program Have to Treat the Family Too?

Drug rehab family recovery has finally come to light. After years of providing drug rehabilitation services, most of the leaders in drug rehabilitation treatment have acknowledged that drug addiction is a family illness. By this they mean that drug addiction has had immediate and direct effects on all members of the family. When you speak to a professional providing treatment in a drug rehab family recovery program they can provide you with specific examples of why the whole family can benefit from family recovery. Some such incidents that are addressed include;
- The addict’s lying and irresponsible behavior destroying the trust within the family system
- Stealing
- Financial irresponsibility
- Deteriorating relationships
- Legal consequences
Unless the family is provided help when the individual enters the drug rehabilitation program, many family recovery problems will still exist upon completion of the individual’s drug rehabilitation.

For many, the discharge plan might include therapy for family recovery with a private therapist in the community or to refer the family to Alanon meetings. There is always the option of the family staying in touch with the family director at the drug rehab center.
