Drug Addiction Assessment

One of the first steps in accepting help for a drug addiction is undergoing a comprehensive drug addiction assessment. This process involves two components - a physical examination and a question and answer session. A drug addiction assessment is necessary prior to you starting rehabilitation treatment because it provides your treatment team with essential information about you, your current state of health and other criteria that's required in order for them to develop a customized treatment approach for your individual needs.

What is Included in a Drug Addiction Assessment?

During your drug addiction assessment, your doctor will provide you with a complete physical exam. This is to measure the extent of physical toll the drugs have taken on your body, organs and functions. You will also be asked specific questions in regards to your history of substance abuse. Common questions can include:

  • What drugs have you used?
  • How long have you been addicted to your particular drug of choice?
  • How much of the drug do you usually take?
  • How often do you take the drug?
  • Do you suffer from any other addictions or medical conditions?
  • Do you suffer from a mental health disorder?
  • What is your medical history?

Answering these questions and others honestly will allow the physician to create a course of treatment that will provide you with the absolute best chance at achieving long-term recovery.
