Co-Occurring Disorders

Effective Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment

In the past, and even in some situations today, people requiring treatment for co-occurring disorders end up in a psychiatric hospital. The reason behind this is that many drug rehabs are not designed to treat both an addiction and psychiatric disorder. Their thinking is that you need to treat each diagnosis separately. Unfortunately that logic is flawed, and many patients have paid the price.

Stepping Stone Center for Recovery happens to be one of the few drug rehabs that is capable of providing state-of-the-art co-occurring disorder treatment. Our philosophy behind co-occurring disorder treatment is found in treating both disorders simultaneously with compassion and patience. Information on Co-Occurring Disorders

Co-occurring disorders are the combination of one or more psychiatric illnesses and one or more addictions. There are several other terms in the treatment of co-occurring disorders that mean the same thing, which you should become familiar with.

Co-occurring disorders are difficult to diagnosis due to the fact that symptoms associated with drug addiction mimic those of psychiatric disorders such as bi-polar disorder. It is for this reason that our drug rehab employs not only a medical director to manage drug and alcohol detox, but also a board-certified psychiatrist trained in addiction medicine.

With this type of medical team, patients are evaluated before, during, and after detox to get as comprehensive of a diagnosis as possible. In some cases, psychiatric symptoms dissipate as the patient continues into rehab. In other cases, psychiatric symptoms remain and will be addressed in a fashion necessary to promote quality, long-lasting recovery.

TESTIMONIALS

I know you will never believe it but it has been ten and a half months since I finished treatment and am still in recovery. I know you will say it may be more of a miracle that I finished rehab being that I was about as resistant a patient can be, but I am making it one day at a time. Special thanks to Robert.

-- Terrance G, Morristown, New Jersey

This is to my therapist Bobby, who never gave up on me. I could never have made it through rehab without your patience. You taught me that I am worth it.

-- Bryan, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

My life was a shambles, my husband wanted a divorce and my children wouldn't speak with me. I felt hopeless until we all got together for family treatment. While we all have some hills to climb, my recovery is solid. Who would have thought, 476 days sober. Love to all.

-- Patti P, Atlanta, Georgia

You guys were right when you told me to get right into meetings. They have kept me clean and sober and I have made a lot of good friends. Thanks for bringing meetings into rehab.
