CNS Depressants

Central nervous system depressants, or CNS depressants, are commonly prescribed for the treatment of various mental disorders. This class of prescription drug consists of two types -- barbiturates and benzodiazepines.

Barbiturates like Nembutol and Mebaral are used primarily for treating:

  • Severe anxiety
  • Sleep disorders
  • Tension

Benzodiazepines include Xanax, Valium and Librium and are used to treat:

  • Anxiety
  • Stress disorders
  • Panic attacks

Because the primary function of CNS depressants is to slow the brain's activity, withdrawal symptoms can occur if the individual stops taking the medication after a long period of use or after they have been taking more than their recommended dose for some time. When cessation of the medication occurs, the brain's activity will increase very quickly, which can cause the individual to experience seizures. For this reason, it is critical that you seek a medical professional for guidance before you stop taking your CNS depressant medication.
