Spirituality in Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation

The Roots of a Strong Recovery

Many know the treatment of addiction requires medical, psychiatric, and social interventions. However, another much overlooked and important component is spirituality. At Stepping Stone Center for Recovery, we provide you the opportunity to explore your spiritual connections.

Creating a spiritual practice of your choosing allows you to discover the essence of your being. It is a chance to understand your values and the meaning of life. Spirituality can help heal some of the isolation, loneliness, and disconnectedness you may have experienced in your addiction. In fact, an addicted person or alcoholic reports a sense of isolation long before they ever became addicted to drugs or alcohol.

Spirituality versus Religion

Spirituality is often confused with religion. Religion is a method that some choose to express their spirituality. However, one can be practicing spirituality while not being involved with any particular religion, and even while being agnostic or atheist.

We discuss the topic of spirituality during treatment through groups, lectures, and individual counseling. We will help you discover your spirituality through journaling, meditating, and selected readings. In addition, all of the 12-step programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous, are spiritual programs, and you will attend them on a daily basis. 12-step programs are grounded in a spiritual understanding that remains undefined, allowing each individual to shape that understanding in his or her own way.

If you are interested in exploring your spirituality through religion, we are generally able to arrange a meeting on-site with an outside clergy member. We also offer non-denominational prayer on Sundays. We recognize that some people choose to explore faith in the context of religion. We can provide a complete Christian tract for those patients who want this experience of recovery and treatment.

TESTIMONIALS

I know you will never believe it but it has been ten and a half months since I finished treatment and am still in recovery. I know you will say it may be more of a miracle that I finished rehab being that I was about as resistant a patient can be, but I am making it one day at a time. Special thanks to Robert.

-- Terrance G, Morristown, New Jersey

My life was a shambles, my husband wanted a divorce and my children wouldn't speak with me. I felt hopeless until we all got together for family treatment. While we all have some hills to climb, my recovery is solid. Who would have thought, 476 days sober. Love to all.

-- Patti P, Atlanta, Georgia

You guys were right when you told me to get right into meetings. They have kept me clean and sober and I have made a lot of good friends. Thanks for bringing meetings into rehab.
