Ambien Withdrawal

What is Ambien Withdrawal?

Ambien is a sedative hypnotic that is commonly prescribed to help individuals sleep. Since it is a Schedule IV drug, it is not considered as addictive as other drugs, such as those in the Schedule III classification. But, over a period of time, a tolerance of the drug will begin to form. The longer one uses Ambien, the greater the chance that they will develop an addiction to it. Once the addiction forms, the user will experience Ambien withdrawal symptoms which usually results in them taking more of the medication, thus continuing the cycle of addiction.

Ambien Withdrawal Symptoms

Since Ambien is a sedative, one of the most common symptoms associated with Ambien withdrawal is insomnia. The individual becomes so dependent on Ambien to fall asleep that when the drug is stopped, sleep becomes extremely difficult to achieve. The lack of sleep is often the instigating factor in the other side effects of cessation of use. Other signs and symptoms of Ambien withdrawal can include:

  • Confusion
  • Strange behaviors
  • Anxiety
  • Hallucinations
  • Increased agitation or aggressive behavior
  • Depression
  • Loss of personal identity
  • Suicidal thoughts

TESTIMONIALS

I know you will never believe it but it has been ten and a half months since I finished treatment and am still in recovery. I know you will say it may be more of a miracle that I finished rehab being that I was about as resistant a patient can be, but I am making it one day at a time. Special thanks to Robert.

-- Terrance G, Morristown, New Jersey

This is to my therapist Bobby, who never gave up on me. I could never have made it through rehab without your patience. You taught me that I am worth it.

-- Bryan, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

My life was a shambles, my husband wanted a divorce and my children wouldn't speak with me. I felt hopeless until we all got together for family treatment. While we all have some hills to climb, my recovery is solid. Who would have thought, 476 days sober. Love to all.

-- Patti P, Atlanta, Georgia

You guys were right when you told me to get right into meetings. They have kept me clean and sober and I have made a lot of good friends. Thanks for bringing meetings into rehab.
