Alcoholism Signs and Symptoms

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, alcoholism symptoms consist of four primary traits that include:

  • Craving: The strong feeling that you have to have a drink
  • Loss of Control: The inability to stop drinking once started
  • Physical Dependence: Experiencing physical problems, such as headaches, nausea or other withdrawal symptoms, when you stop drinking
  • Tolerance: When you need to drink more and more alcohol in order to feel "drunk" or "high"

If you suspect someone is abusing alcohol the most obvious alcoholism signs to look for are:

  • A strong and overwhelming desire to drink alcohol at a specific time of day
  • A ritual of drinking alcohol before, with or after dinner, and annoyance with others when this behavior is questioned or disturbed
  • The inability to stop drinking once the person starts to drink alcohol
  • The ability to drink a large quantity of alcohol without appearing intoxicated
  • Blackouts that do not allow the person to remember conversations or commitments
  • A loss of interest in activities that were once pleasurable

Alcoholism Signs Will Cause Health Problems

The alcoholism signs listed above are cause for concern because if alcoholism treatment is not provided, the disease can lead to a variety of health problems including:

  • Liver disease
  • Brain damage
  • Memory loss
  • "Wet brain" (the brain no longer functions correctly)

Alcoholism can also cause some very scary mental effects as well. Cravings can cause those suffering from alcoholism to try to get alcohol by any means necessary. This can bring about some very drastic personality changes in a person.

The Importance of Alcoholism Treatment

Alcohol is a popular drug in the United States. Unlike many drugs, however, moderate consumption is not dangerous for most adults. The problem is that about 17.6 million Americans suffer from alcoholism, which means that they are abusing the drug and causing problems with their own health. For these individuals, if alcohol addiction treatment is not provided, their disease could prove fatal.

Sadly, most people suffering from alcoholism fail to understand just how dangerous the drug is and that the disease can even lead to death. Usually, they do not believe that they are addicted, and they think they can stop drinking whenever they want. Because of this denial, it can be very difficult to convince an individual that they desperately need alcoholism treatment. In many cases, an intervention is required before the sufferer will accept admission into an alcoholism rehab center.

The truth is, alcoholism is a chronic disease with no known cure, however, it is proven that a quality alcohol detox program followed by a comprehensive alcohol treatment program do make recovery a possibility.

TESTIMONIALS

I know you will never believe it but it has been ten and a half months since I finished treatment and am still in recovery. I know you will say it may be more of a miracle that I finished rehab being that I was about as resistant a patient can be, but I am making it one day at a time. Special thanks to Robert.

-- Terrance G, Morristown, New Jersey

This is to my therapist Bobby, who never gave up on me. I could never have made it through rehab without your patience. You taught me that I am worth it.

-- Bryan, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

My life was a shambles, my husband wanted a divorce and my children wouldn't speak with me. I felt hopeless until we all got together for family treatment. While we all have some hills to climb, my recovery is solid. Who would have thought, 476 days sober. Love to all.

-- Patti P, Atlanta, Georgia

You guys were right when you told me to get right into meetings. They have kept me clean and sober and I have made a lot of good friends. Thanks for bringing meetings into rehab.
